December 12, 2009: Mixed Business II

Update 04/01/2023: Mixed Business is now permanently closed.

We've stopped by Mixed Business a couple of times before, and this weekend it made for a convenient and tasty start to a 'lil road trip. The fruit toast with fig compote and ricotta ($7.50) was larger and more filling than I expected - very sweet with the double hit of dried fruit in the bread and spread. Perhaps a little more ricotta would have been nice. Regardless, it was an innovative topping and certainly more restrained than the banana split brioche.

Michael ordered the poached eggs and veg beans on sourdough toast ($13.50), which he coveted but ultimately didn't order on our first visit to Mixed Business. Spiced with paprika and sprinkled with parmesan and basil, this dish had Michael proclaiming this cafe his new favourite spot for breakfast. While the sweeter side of the menu hasn't quite had me swooning, I agree that it's a lovely cafe - the high quality of the food and service seems reliable, the prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is most pleasant.

  2. I'm a fan of the beans too, though I wish they let you order extras/sides there, because I reckon they'd be better with some fetta, or avocado, or mushrooms or... just something else to break up the immense serving of beans and more beans (the parmesan, while a locely touch, is a little too understated for the job, IMO). The Dench's bread they use is awesome, too.

  4. Mixed Business is super yummy. I go there quite a bit and they do actually let you order extra sides. I tend to order extras with the toasts and poached eggs there because I seem to always need avocado with everything.
