January 5, 2007: The Vegie Bar III

Our third visit to the Vegie Bar was inspired by my friend Justine's short visit south of the border. It was the meeting point suggested by Justine's sister, a Melbourne resident of about four years, before she was even aware that Michael and I are vegetarian. It's pleasing to know that this lively and affordable restaurant is appreciated by omnivores, too!

On the left is my house salad with spring rolls ($7.90). The rolls were crispy-fried and piping hot, the salad an enormous pile of myriad fresh veges. There was no apparent rhyme or reason to the vege selection, but I admire a restaurant that's not afraid to give you a plate towering with undressed examples of what's good for you. Michael ordered one of the specials, mushrooms stuffed with corn, rice, cheese and topped with chilli jam ($10.50). An ordering mishap meant that they arrived much later than the rest of our meals, but Michael demolished them long before I'd stopped picking at my salad, testament to their deliciousness.

  1. Being a happy omnivore myself (tried vegetarianism, didn't work for me), I can happily say that I quite love Veggie Bar as well - my best friend is vegetarian (former vegan) and we go here for dinner every now and then :) Speaking of which, I haven't been there in awhile, it may be time to schedule another trip!
