Berrissimo

22/03/2014: Berrissimo have just announced that this is their last weekend of trading! We'll miss them.

September 21, 2013

Frozen yoghurt businesses have taken over Melbourne in the past year or so. Berrissimo is one of two on Brunswick St, and there are a couple further ice-creameries close by. This one rates a mention because of their impressive vegan options: they offer several dairy-free soft-serves at a time and lots of goodies in the display case.

Everything vegan gets a clear (V) so there's no need to clog up the queue firing ingredient-based questions at the staff. You're more likely to bring ordering to a stand-still staring slack-jawed at all the possibilities. (Gluten-free options are noted too.)

The most recent flavour rotation includes lemonade, Nutella and chocolate mousse. Michael and I both greedily bypassed the light and fruity alternatives and hit the chocolate - a medium cup of Nutella with truffles and peanut butter fudge sauce for him ($7.30) and a small cup of chocolate mousse with coconut rough and more peanut butter fudge for me ($5.80).

These desserts were big on flavour and fun, without any weird dairy-sub aftertaste. Nothing about them reminded me of yoghurt, they were just great soft-serves. Serving sizes are generous and I think the prices are reasonable (you could order a small cup with free chocolate sauce for $4) - we'll be back to report on their flavour changes as summer rolls on.

Berrissimo comes recommended by plenty of vegan bloggers - check out various flavour combinations on In The Mood For Noodles, vegawesome and across one, two, three posts on Vegan Bullsh*t.

Accessibility: We think the entry is flat, and the interior is spacious. We ordered and paid at a low-ish counter. The display case of toppings is low-ish but might be difficult to view from a wheelchair (see top photo). We didn't notice the toilets.

  1. I don't think I've actually seen a vegan froyo shop before! Definitely not something I've seen in Sydney.

  2. Hi,

Is Nutella vegan? This doesn't seem to be http://www.nutella.com.au/products/, or have I been passing it up all this time for nothing?

    Can you help me out?

    1. Hi Sam - no, I'm pretty sure that Nutella contains milk powder. I imagine that this soft serve just takes inspiration from the choc-hazelnut flavour and doesn't contain any Nutella-brand spread.

  3. I've been to Berrissimo once, but didn't realise they were so accommodating of special diets. Nice! I wasn't particularly enamoured when I went, but maybe I should try other flavours.

    1. Hi leaf! There are so many fro-yo outlets around that there might be better ones for those of us with unconstrained diets. :-)

    1. Hannah - this is worth a try but I'd entreat you to start with the small cup, these are bigger than they look. :-P

  5. I went there once or twice last summer but the flavours on offer were nowhere near as exciting as those ones sound! I may have to give it another try once the weather warms up here!

    1. Hi Lizzie B! I gather that they change the flavours around a bit, I wonder if the fruitier ones will be back for summer.

  6. Oh my goodness, I have been hanging out to get back to Melbourne to go here...I saw some other people post about their vegan chocolate mousse and I'm already sold. Chocolate mousse is my major weakness!

    1. Hi Caeli! I'm not sure how long it'll take you to make it back down here, but I hope you get a chance to try it. Berrissimo rotate their flavours every now and then, and I'm sure they'll offer something you'll like regardless. :-)
