September 15, 2006: Polly

The December evening that we shared we Krusty and Jason was clearly one to remember, as I post about the third Fitzroy establishment that they introduced us to. Polly is a distinctively atmospheric bar on Brunswick St, all crimson walls, heavy curtains, gilded mirrors, antique furniture upholstered in velour and very dim lighting. On a Saturday night there can be a 15-deep line of hipsters waiting for their piece of the action, but 6pm on a Friday is NOT cocktail hour in Melbourne. And the cocktail list is the best reason to be here. Pages and pages of adult liquid desserts. Exhibit A: my Turkish delight, containing crème de cacao, cherry brandy, liqueur de roses and absolut vanilla. Michael ordered a more balanced (but no less potent) Damage Control, consisting of coriander, mint, ginger, lime, vodka, lychee liqueur, limoncello, cranberry juice, and a lot of crushed ice. If you’re after something to soak up the alcohol, the menu offers everything from chips and aioli to Grand Marnier truffles and fairy bread. Visiting Polly is a rare treat, and a most enjoyable one at an early hour with only a few fellow customers.

Address: 401 Brunswick St, Fitzroy

  1. Polly is also a great place to:
    a. take a date
    b. impress the pants off out of town visitors
    c. have a baby shower (I kid you not, though it was a group of friends more interested in drinking than progeny)
    d. eat great nibbles and drink the best coctails in town - but go easy on the absinthe!

  2. Yep, I was an impressed out-of-towner the first time we visited.

Wow, a baby shower! Much less prim than afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches. If I were the mum-to-be I might be driven mad by the fabulous cocktails I couldn't drink (or I might just be craving pickles, who knows).
